Introduction:
My wife Debbie and I have had a healthy obsession with the island of Thassos for many years. We are gladly living the Thassos dream every day whether we are on Thassos island or doing something Greek or Thassian related in England. It could be my book about our Thassos journey , emails and telephone calls to and from Thassos, letters, photos, browsing the internet, Greece magazines or simply thoughts and conversations about things that we have done or will do in our future. Even if it is something small like learning a new Greek word of the day! There is something Thassos going on in our lives every day!
Thassos really is the jewel of the Aegean sea for many people. More people, by percentage, return to Thassos after their first visit than any other Greek island. For those who are not aquainted with this special place on earth, Thassos is the most Northern Greek island situated approximately 8 miles from mainland Keromotti Port, and it's nearest city is mainland Kavala. Thassos is also one of the greenest islands with a near perfect climate of hot summer sun and cool winters with a little wind and rain mixed in. It has been known to snow in late April and then be 85 degrees c in early May!
We first started visiting Thassos in May 2001 and have never looked back. We tried Rhodes, Athens and Zakynthos and really enjoyed our time at them all, but we always kept being drawn back to Thassos. It has a special charm all of it's own. Before having our own house built (see Dream come true page), we always stayed at the Golden Beach resort and travelled to different locations around the island from there via the use of a hire car from our very good friend Michael who runs the Avis office at Golden Beach (see Travel page). Michael and his family have become special to us over the years and we always try to find time to spend with them when we are on the island.
We now have a beautiful house on the outskirts of Agios Georgious village near Rachoni. The land purchase and house build was completed in an excellent manner by Thassos-Properties with the guidance of Gregory Nagoulidis who has also become a very good and reliable friend (see Dream come true page). As we have the house, we also like to visit Thassos out of the holiday season as it is quieter with less tourists. This way it is easier to see traditional Thassian Greek every day life at it's best.
Getting to Thassos out of the tourist season is quite easy (see Travel page for info). Things look and feel so much different at these times of the year. The main tourist areas like Golden Beach (Skala Panagia) for example are so quiet with almost all of the shops, Tavernas and hotels closed. It is even easier then to see the natural beauty of the island. Having said this, one of the reasons that we chose our house to be built within a typical Greek village is because most of the services are available all year round and in close proximity.
If you have been to Thassos before, you will know how beautiful and charming the island is with breathtaking views and scenery where ever you go. You will also have come to realise how warm, honest and friendly most of the islanders are too. Since spending more time on Thassos island and coming into contact with more and more local people, due to our house build, we have come to realise what a special race the Greeks are. Also many English, Canadian and German friends that we have made are always there for us if we need them in our close knit village community.
Of course, if you have not visited Thassos before, I hope that I have whetted your appetite and maybe you will visit one day.
